Athi Petela is a South African writer and director known for bold, emotionally resonant storytelling. Her directorial debut, Trapped (2021), explored themes of transformation and identity. She has since directed and co-directed acclaimed television dramas including Ayeye: Stripped, Redemption, and BET Africa’s Queendom (2024). That same year, she directed M’tase Khaya, a Showmax original film centered on sisterhood and family.
Outside of scripted work, Petela has led public service campaigns with the United Nations Population Fund, addressing gender-based violence, HIV awareness, and human trafficking. Her growing body of work reflects a strong commitment to socially conscious narratives and a distinctive voice in South African storytelling.
